Abstract
The main reason for me to do an internship at a primary school in Hamburg was that I believe schools to be the fundamental leverage points of societal change. Within schools, children are being acquired with the necessary skills and knowledge to live and function within the current societal, economic and political system. However, looking at the environmental degradation due to human activities in the last decades, the demands of skills and knowledge to live and function in the world of tomorrow has changed. However, as humanity is being confronted with unprecedented issues such as climate change, gradual biodiversity loss or the digital assimilation of society, German schools are not at all or only slowly adapting to these new challenges that children need to be prepared for. Therefore, my internship at the ‘Ganztagsschule St. Pauli’ aimed at understanding and analysing current educational practices and how they are lacking in preparing students for the ever growing challenges of the 21st century. Furthermore, I wanted to get insights into primary school practices rather than secondary school practices, since the earlier children are being confronted with the challenges that they will be facing as they grow older, the earlier they start caring about and working towards improving the world that they will inhabit in future.
