Abstract
This research is aimed at assessing how social studies in its current form contributes to the development of citizenship in Dutch high schools. It investigates the challenges of both citizenship education and social studies education. It reveals a lack of a cohesive curriculum, and a history of discussion about unclear purposes and approaches towards the subject, resulting in varied learning experiences for students across different schools and teachers. There is an apparent need for more structured approaches and improved measurement tools to assess citizenship education's efficiency. Although there is clear recognition and respect among students as to the subject's importance, there appear to be large discrepancies between their social studies experiences. It can be reasoned that social studies, in its current state, cannot sufficiently foster citizenship and social cohesion. Recommendations for addressing the challenges include clearer frameworks, exploring options for an expanded curriculum, and improved assessment methods. More broadly, the results accentuate the importance of strengthening social studies education with the goal of better preparing Dutch students for active citizenship.
