Abstract

Abstract This study examines the attitudes of Dujiangyan residents towards the development of water culture tourism in the area, focusing on the effects of tourism and the stage of attitudes as determined by Doxey's Index of Tourist Irritation (ITI). By understanding residents' attitudes, the study aims to develop effective strategies for sustainable tourism development and mitigate potential negative impacts. A mixed-methods approach is employed, including a survey questionnaire and in-depth interviews with residents. The findings indicate that most residents have a favourable attitude towards tourism and support its expansion due to the benefits it brings. However, concerns are raised about issues such as overcrowding, cultural authenticity, and environmental pollution. To ensure long-term sustainability, the study suggests prioritizing sustainable tourism planning, involving the younger generation, and effectively managing visitor numbers. Environmental protection measures, such as waste management and noise reduction, are also important. Future research should explore the evolution of residents' perspectives over time and expand sample sizes to gain a comprehensive understanding of diverse local perspectives. This study contributes to the theoretical and practical understanding of tourism's effects and promotes social and environmental sustainability in Dujiangyan's water culture tourism.
