Abstract
Collaboration can be an opportunity for organizations to overcome sustainability challenges. Consortia are a specific form of collaboration that aim to overcome these challenges. This research aims to provide an overview of the motivations of organizations to join consortia in the plastic industry that focus on circularity innovation. Specifically, the focus lies on three types of organizations: multinationals, SMEs, and universities. The research approach is qualitative, and the consortia in the Circular Plastic Initiative of ISPT and DPI were used as a single case study. I interviewed nine participants from different organizations. In the results, the identified motivations are distinguished into two categories. The first category, motivations to internalize value, describes the motivations of organizations about what they would like to gain from the consortium. Second, the motivations to generate value are related to the motivations of organizations to contribute to the consortium. Results show that the motivations to internalize value are: to acquire a network, develop a business case (not for universities), increase sustainability performance, gain knowledge, and acquire future academics/ employees. Furthermore, the motivations to generate value are: to share knowledge, educate students, share resources, and take up a role as an organization within the consortium. While existing literature focuses mainly on motivations to collaborate in general and in small group collaborations, this study contributes to the theories on the motivations of organizations to join consortia.
