Abstract
Recurring cultural and social events are an important part of public life in Europe. However, there is no open and research-grade dataset covering a range of recurring events over time, across countries, and across event types. This thesis addresses that gap in two ways. First, it introduces EuroEvents-DS, a dataset of 155 recurring events from all 31 EU/EEA/CH countries, spanning 2015 to 2024, collected from Wikidata, a directory of performing arts festivals, and manual curation. Wikipedia pageviews are used as a proxy for public interest and benchmarked against reported attendance for a sample of 20 events. Second, the dataset is used to explore longitudinal patterns of digital engagement and their structural predictors. K-means clustering identifies four trajectory types, with national days and religious festivals concentrated in a cluster least affected by disruption, and carnivals and food festivals largely absent from it. Two regression models indicate that community and religious events were less affected than commercial cultural festivals, while post-2021 recovery was associated mainly with national economic capacity rather than event characteristics. The results suggest that events embedded in civic and institutional structures maintain digital interest even when physical gatherings are suspended.
