Abstract
This research studies how supporters of SC Cambuur and sc Heerenveen experience and symbolically shape their club, city or province, and mutual rivalry. Both clubs are located just thirty kilometres apart within the same province, yet they cultivate opposing identities: Heerenveen profiles itself as the club of Fryslân, while Cambuur projects a distinctly Leeuwarder, urban identity. Based on ten semi-structured in-depth interviews with season ticket holders of both clubs, this research shows that the contrast between the two supporter groups is not symmetrical. Heerenveen supporters articulate their identity at a provincial level and require significant symbolic effort, in the form of the Frisian national anthem, the pompeblêd flag, and club mottos, to make that dispersed community palpable. Cambuur supporters, on the other hand, largely equate their identity with the city of Leeuwarden, which sustains itself through dialect, cityscape, and daily routines. Upon closer examination, their so-called 'anti-Frisian' stance turns out not to be a rejection of Fryslân, but a reaction to the appropriation of Frisian symbols by Heerenveen. The Frisian football rivalry is therefore not a clash between Frisian and non-Frisian, but a battle over who may rightfully call themselves the better Frisian.
