Abstract
This thesis investigates the social practice and cultural value of mountain singing among women in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Even with women's longstanding participation, their contributions have received limited attention in academic and regional narratives, which have historically privileged masculine, military-associated traditions. Using a qualitative research design, this study conducted 15 semi-structured interviews with female choir members across the region. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify how women perform, learn, and transmit these oral traditions. The findings demonstrate that mountain songs are not only musical repertoires, but living social practices through which women negotiate identity, memory, and a sense of belonging. The research reveals that women act as active custodians of cultural heritage, contributing to the maintenance of the social environments where these traditions evolve. By centering women’s voices, the thesis argues that their labor and practice provides the essential social infrastructure for cultural continuity. This study challenges dominant regional discourses and contributes to broader debates on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and gender, offering a more inclusive understanding of mountain singing as a dynamic, female-led practice.
