Abstract
Despite formal entitlement to healthcare, migrant women with status holder status in the Northern Netherlands face significant barriers to access. This study explores how these women experience access to healthcare services, drawing on semi-structured interviews with ten participants, analyzed through a narrative-informed thematic analysis. Using the six dimensions of access by Penchansky & Thomas (1981) and Saurman (2016) as an analytical lens, findings revealed that barriers were present across all dimensions, with language emerging as the most prominent. The telephone-based structure of Dutch primary care concentrates language barriers at the first point of contact, with limited awareness on professional interpreter services exacerbating existing barriers. Trust emerged as an important facilitator, built through individual, rather than systematic experiences, with healthcare providers. The findings suggest migrant women as status holders in the Northern Netherlands experience healthcare access through the lens of previous experiences, with language and trust emerging as shaping factors of access.
