Abstract
Blind box products contain random items unknown to the buyer before purchase and have become increasingly popular over the past few years. Past research has highlighted psychological mechanisms, among other factors, that contribute to blind box consumer behavior. However, research on the role of perceived peer pressure and environmental awareness in purchase frequency is limited. This study investigated whether perceived peer pressure could predict blind box purchase frequency and explored whether environmental awareness moderates this relationship. 161 participants completed a quantitative survey with Likert-scale questions which assessed perceived peer pressure, environmental awareness, and purchase frequency. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation, simple linear regression, and moderation analysis. The results showed a strong positive correlation between peer pressure and the frequency of blind box purchases. Additionally, regression analysis showed that peer pressure significantly predicted purchase frequency. Furthermore, the interaction between peer pressure and environmental awareness was not statistically significant, indicating that environmental awareness did not moderate the relationship between peer pressure and blind box purchasing. The findings show that social influences play a large role in blind box consumption. In contrast, awareness of environmental consequences seems to be insufficient to reduce participation in blind box consumption.
