Abstract
Plastic pollution, driven by linear production and consumption models and inadequate waste management systems, is a major environmental challenge. The circular economy has emerged as a potential solution. This requires businesses to move away from linear practices towards more circular ones. These include strategies that aim to minimise waste and keep materials in the economy through, for example, reuse systems, the incorporation of recycled plastics into their products or designing products for reuse. This paper examines selected social, economic, technological and institutional and regulatory factors influencing circular plastic management practices among businesses. Using a systematic literature review, 13 peer-reviewed articles were selected to identify challenges and opportunities across these four dimensions. A SWOT analysis was applied to categorise these, together with weaknesses and threats, into internal and external factors. Key challenges include limited consumer acceptance of circular solutions, financial constraints and investment uncertainties, technological limitations and fragmented regulatory environments. Opportunities include technological innovations, employment creation, and multistakeholder collaborations. Institutional and regulatory factors were identified as the most important factor, since institutional support and regulations directly influence business compliance, consumer behaviour, and the economic and technological feasibility of circular solutions.
