Abstract
This thesis critically examines the Green Climate Fund (GCF) on both a world systems and post-structuralist register. It asks how the GCF reproduces or challenges injustice through its operational procedures, financial logics, and modes of subject formation. And how the financial flows within the GCF relate to the broader economic system. By synthesis between world-systemic and post-structuralist thought, the thesis argues that the GCF should be understood as a world-systemic dispositif: an institution embedded in the capitalist world-economy that governs climate vulnerability through subjectification and encoding. The thesis argues that the GCF is pharmakonic: it can provide real resources and support, while simultaneously stabilising the asymmetrical order through which climate injustice is reproduced. Drawing on Rahel Jaeggi’s theory of critique, regression, and progress, the thesis concludes that by a critique of climate-finance institutions we can progress from injustice.
