Abstract
This study investigates the influence of parental upbringing on peoples’ views on gender and sexuality. A survey was conducted targeting Dutch adolescents, who had to answer questions and statements about both their own and their parents personal situation and outlook on political and gender and sexuality issues. Exploratory Factor Analysis reveals two underlying factors: 1) Gender and Sexual Diversity, focussing on the inclusion and visibility of queer individuals; and 2) Relationship and Sexual Freedom, concerning the freedom of individuals to structure their relationships how they want. Regression analysis showed that the scores of parents on those factors directly influenced the scores of the corresponding participants. Democratic attitude of parents (Relationship and Sexual Freedom) and whether a participant was heterosexual (Gender and Sexual Diversity) also played significant roles.
