Abstract
This research aims to identify the main motivations and barriers of youth in Leeuwarden towards political participation. It does so by collecting data from 6 focus groups and 2 one-on-one interviews (with a total of 23 participants). Using Lowndes’ CLEAR-model, all results are structured into 5 stages of participation, so it can be seen how far youth participation is, and to categorise which stage most barriers are faced in. The main motivations found are personal experience/problem, a sense of moral duty, personal development opportunities, compensation, and a strong desire for community and belonging, while the main barriers identified were a lack of resources, a lack of communication, social norms, not feeling heard or taken seriously, not seeing real change and feeling unqualified. With these findings a set of recommendations for the local municipality has been set up. Wider European relevance of these recommendations may be achieved in locations with similar conditions to Leeuwarden.
