Abstract

This research examines the drivers, barriers, and effective strategies for communicating companies’ impact on biodiversity to both external and internal corporate stakeholders, with a focus on two key stakeholder groups: customers and employees. Recognizing biodiversity as one of the most pressing issues of our century, this study aims to generate rich insights into current practices. Companies have historically overlooked biodiversity due to its complexity, but rising stakeholder pressure is prompting a shift toward greater transparency. Using an abductive qualitative approach, interviews were conducted with internal and external stakeholders of two Dutch companies. Findings reveal that both internal motivations and external demands drive communication, while barriers include difficulties in measuring, low interest, and lack of public awareness. Consequently, companies respond through varied communication methods and strategies. This study contributes to the literature by also offering practical recommendations to enhance corporate biodiversity impact communication.
