Abstract

The voluntourism has been heavily ciriticised for its tendency to perpetuate colonial dynamics and undermine local agency. Hence, this thesis explores how the operations of volunteer sending agencies interact with the host communities. More commercial agencies tend to focus more on the volunteer experience rather than the host communities and therefore perpetuate colonial dynamics that prioritise Western interests. Less commercial agencies have moved away from belittling marketing and more inclusive operations but room for improvement remains.
