Abstract
This study explored the motivations, values, and beliefs driving entrepreneurs to transition their companies to steward-ownership, which is a governance model that embeds purpose and independence into the business’s legal structure. Although steward-ownership is not a new concept, it has only recently gained traction as a response to the limitations of traditional shareholder capitalism. Using qualitative thematic analysis of secondary data from 55 steward-owned companies, the research identified ten motivational codes, grouped into four overarching themes. The findings were interpreted through Self-Determination Theory (Ryan and Deci, 2000), Schwartz’s (1992) theory of basic human values, Van de Ven and Poole’s (1995) organisational change theories, and the Transtheoretical Model of Change (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983). Results show that motivations vary from strategic concerns to ethical values, and multiple motivations often influence the same entrepreneur’s actions.
