Abstract

The tech industry is known for rapid innovation, high capital demands, and fast-paced growth. But for entrepreneurs who want to create more than just the next big product, this pace can come at a cost: mission drift. When social and environmental goals get pushed aside in favor of short-term profit, sustainable entrepreneurship loses its meaning. One emerging solution is steward ownership. This alternative ownership model is gaining traction among purpose-driven founders who want to safeguard their mission over the long term. But what does steward ownership look like in practice? What motivates founders to choose it, and what obstacles do they face? This thesis translates the findings from my sustainable entrepreneurship project on steward ownership in the Dutch tech sector into practical insights for entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers.
