Abstract
The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) is an international organization dedicated to advancing climate adaptation through partnerships and financial initiatives. Established in 2018, the GCA collaborates with states and major institutions such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank to drive adaptation efforts globally. The GCA’s Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) program, where I interned, focuses on empowering grassroots climate initiatives by organizing the annual Local Adaptation Champions Awards and facilitating adaptation projects across Africa and Asia. My internship centered on writing and editing stories about climate adaptation projects for the GCA’s Global Hub on LLA website. These stories highlighted nominees and winners of the Local Adaptation Champions Awards, aiming to amplify their impact and visibility. Over 21 weeks, I produced 15 original stories and edited 21 additional pieces. My work involved reviewing award applications, conducting independent research, and interviewing project leaders to create engaging narratives. I also enhanced previously published stories by refining content, improving clarity, and incorporating more personal perspectives from project leaders and beneficiaries. My internship took place between the 5th of August and the 31st of January, with a one month break during December so that I could attend a research campaign in Antarctica. I worked 30 hours per week, totalling 630 work hours. This output exceeds the 570 hours required to receive 20 credits. Working remotely from California presented time zone challenges, limiting my participation in team meetings. However, I maintained weekly check-ins with my supervisor and managed to balance productivity with personal commitments. Through this experience, I honed my writing, research, and communication skills, ensuring that stories were compelling and accessible to a general audience. Beyond content creation, the internship allowed me to critically evaluate the LLA program’s scope and impact. While the GCA effectively supports Global South initiatives, I observed gaps in engagement with Global North communities, particularly Indigenous and working-class groups. This reflection, combined with my growing expertise in climate adaptation storytelling, has shaped my aspirations for future work in the field, emphasizing equity, decolonization, and cross-regional solidarity in climate resilience efforts.
