Abstract

This paper explores the crucial role of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in municipal organic waste management within the context of carbon governance, particularly framed by the Paris Agreement's Article 6.2. It highlights the necessity for local intermediaries to mitigate urban greenhouse gas emissions and generate carbon credits. Emphasizing the overlooked potential of organic waste material in carbon reduction, this paper underscores the challenges and opportunities in quantifying and commodifying resource flows. Additionally, it addresses the complexity of carbon credit valuation and the political and socioeconomic dynamics shaping waste management policies. By employing political ecology theory, this study focuses on a selected municipality and its MSMEs, aiming to highlight how these entities identify and create carbon credits, thus contributing to local carbon mitigation efforts.
