Abstract
This study investigates the formation of different medication waste streams in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) and proposes ways to mitigate this waste. Through qualitative research conducted in and surrounding two LTCFs in the Netherlands, key findings highlight that strict regulations prohibiting medication reuse, lack of awareness about medication costs among healthcare professionals, and inefficiencies in manual inventory management significantly contribute to medication waste. Additionally, changes in a patient’s health and oversized medication packaging exacerbate the issue. The research suggests that allowing medication reuse from contained sites, like LTCFs, improving cost awareness at healthcare professionals, implementing electronic inventory systems, and optimizing packaging sizes can substantially reduce medication waste. These findings underscore the need for policy adjustments and operational improvements to promote sustainability and efficiency in LTCFs.
