Abstract
This study explores the factors influencing holiday house owners in Oostmahorn, Netherlands, to adopt sustainable tourism practices. Through interviews with six participants, the research identifies key influences such as financial considerations, property features, and environmental awareness. The findings emphasize the significant role of financial factors, varying levels of environmental consciousness, and the importance of community engagement. Online travel agencies (OTAs) are also noted for their potential to promote sustainable practices by giving more exposure to eco-friendly properties. Holiday house owners can significantly contribute to sustainable tourism by adopting eco-friendly measures and educating guests. Financial considerations, such as cost savings and return on investment, are major motivators for sustainable practices, while greater environmental awareness leads to a stronger commitment to sustainability. Engaging the local community can drive sustainable initiatives, and government policies and incentives can significantly impact adopting sustainable practices. The study used a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews conducted with six holiday house owners, and the data was analyzed through coding to identify key themes. The research concludes that financial factors, property features, and environmental awareness are the most influential factors. Community involvement and effective rental management also play crucial roles. Increasing awareness and providing targeted support can enhance the adoption of sustainable practices, contributing to sustainable tourism development.
