Abstract

This study focuses on Black lesbian-identifying mothers who seek asylum in the Netherlands. The paper explores how Black lesbian-identifying mothers navigate the complexities of the Dutch asylum process, mainly focusing on the challenges they encounter during assessment interviews and in their daily lives while in asylum. While research on LGBTQIA+ asylum claims is growing, a significant gap exists regarding the specific experiences of Black lesbian mothers. This paper addresses this gap by centering their experiences within the Dutch asylum system. The paper seeks to raise awareness of the discrimination and bias, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and a Western notion of what constitutes “good motherhood”, held by the Dutch asylum authorities in a system built on a Western neo-liberal ideology and victimization. Dutch asylum authorities lack the recognition and acknowledgement of intersectional experiences and fail to consider motherhood in the assessment procedure. Following a qualitative research approach, I conducted six semi-structured interviews with lesbian-identifying mothers who have been seeking Dutch asylum.
