Abstract
This research aims to contribute to the knowledge of the circular economy (CE) in the agricultural sector through a case study in Central Finland. The study analyses CE perceptions by identifying opportunities and challenges regarding its implementation. Previous research highlights the ambiguity in CE terminology, the high cost of technologies, the lack of a uniform approach, and the environmental benefits. The research identifies a narrow view of CE among stakeholders, primarily focusing on environmental benefits rather than broader social or economic opportunities. This study underscores the need for clear definitions and practical tools for the agricultural sector to embrace CE practices. Structural issues such as low profitability and inadequate political support are significant factors in the way of progress. Current policies do not sufficiently support CE implementation in the agricultural sector, often increasing bureaucracy and hindering progress. Two recommendations are proposed: Firstly, research, development, and awareness should be increased to enhance knowledge of CE in agriculture; and secondly, agricultural policies and bureaucratic processes should be revised to support CE initiatives better. The European Union has a crucial role in enabling the CE transition. Further studies should focus on specific agricultural sectors, the role of farmers in CE, and the impact of current policies on advancing CE practices.
