Abstract

This thesis focuses on the alignment between the Dutch National Ecological Network (NEN) and management strategies in three distinct natural areas. It does so by comparing policies that are part of the NEN to the management plans for the Oostvaardersplassen, Drents-Friese Wold, and Amsterdamse Bos areas. The main findings include that areas with a shorter history have management plans that are more aligned with the policies, but less diverse. On the other hand, areas that are older have less alignment with the policies, but are also more diverse. This study demonstrates the relevance and impact of the alignment between policies and management, but also highlights that divergent strategies can form an effective management mix and improve ecosystems.
