Abstract
In light of the growing importance of sustainable business practices, this thesis investigates the drivers and barriers to implementing sustainable business practices in micro-enterprises, focusing on the case of TrendingTea. Micro-enterprises can bring about change for sustainability due to, amongst other factors, their entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking. By combining empirical data from in-depth semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders and secondary sources, this study fills the existing gap in the literature by specifically looking into micro-enterprises’ ability to engage in sustainable business practices as opposed to small and medium-sized enterprises. The findings highlight several key drivers that contribute to sustainable business practices, including a clear market demand for sustainable products, the owner-managers' mission and values, and the utilisation of external knowledge and expertise. Conversely, significant challenges are also identified, such as consumer preferences and balancing sustainability with financial targets. The findings can inform micro-entrepreneurs in making informed decisions to enhance their sustainable business practices while considering the unique opportunities and challenges they might face. In addition, potential areas for further research have been identified which include exploring strategies for overcoming the identified barriers and developing sustainable business models in micro-enterprises.
