Abstract
This study explores the barriers and drivers faced by the European agrochemical industry in transitioning towards sustainability, drawing upon primary data from 11 interviews and a comprehensive literature review. Economic incentives, Innovation, Legislation, and Supply Chain factors were identified as barriers and drivers. Additionally, the Technological and Social dimensions were unveiled as facilitators. As a result, the research draws attention to challenges with legislation and innovation, particularly concerning the processes associated with regulatory approval and product development. On the contrary, opportunities within the innovation of alternative products and the implementation of a sustainable entrepreneur were underlined. Through these insights, the novel framework ELLIST was developed, placing the sustainable entrepreneur at its core, enabling the transformation of obstacles into opportunities by adopting a proactive and conscious mindset. With the judicious use of the ELISST framework and a spirit of entrepreneurship, the industry has the potential to transition into a sustainable future.
