Abstract

The implementation of new nitrogen sanctions by the government in the Netherlands sparked discontent among farmers, leading to escalated protests where harmful actions were used. This study examines the influence of hubristic and authentic pride on Dutch farmers' attitudes towards pro-environmental sanctions, farmer protests, and pro-environmental behavior. The study investigates how these attitudes are affected through an online experiment utilizing pride manipulations in the form of an emotional recall task, with which the participants were primed with the two different types of pride. Although no significant statistical results were obtained, the descriptive findings suggest a positive relation between authentic pride and sustainable behavior intentions, as well as a greater value for nature. However, hubristic pride did not significantly impact farmers' attitudes towards farming as expected, showing that hubristic pride might not be an influential factor when it comes to farmers’ attitudes towards the sanctions and protests. Furthermore, descriptive gendered differences were also observed, particularly regarding support for the protests as women seemed more supportive of protests and more against harmful actions during protests. However, this study mainly highlights the challenges in accessing and effectively engaging farmers as research participants and emphasizes the need for tailored scales and manipulations in future investigations to better understand this unique population group.
