Abstract

This thesis examines the obstacles faced by queer environmental migrants during their asylum process in the Netherlands and investigates the challenges they encounter while rebuilding their social capital. Through a social capital framework, the study explores the impact of sexuality and gender identity on the migration experiences of queer individuals. The research reveals a lack of systematic identification of vulnerable asylum seekers, limited institutional support, and discrimination against LGBTQIA+ individuals within the Dutch asylum system, hindering their integration and social inclusion. The analysis of asylum policies indicates a focus on physical health rather than mental health or social integration. Interviews with employees of the Centraal Orgaan Asielzoekers (COA) uncover the limited reach of initiatives designed to facilitate social capital rebuilding, leaving many LGBTQIA+ refugees without adequate support. The study emphasizes the need for inclusive policies and better support systems that address the diverse identities and needs of asylum seekers. Considering the anticipated increase in climate refugees, this research calls for policymakers to prioritize the rebuilding of social capital, develop more inclusive policies, and foster integration and social inclusion for all individuals seeking asylum in the Netherlands, including queer refugees and other minority groups.
