Abstract
The fashion industry is one of the world’s most polluting industries. In response, the slow fashion movement was brought to life in 2007 by Kate Fletcher. By focusing mainly on ecological improvements, the social issues applying to the concept of slow fashion were neglected. Therefore, the research question of this study is: How can European social entrepreneurs in the fashion industry contribute to the slow fashion movement in Europe? Considering the nascent development stage of the slow fashion movement, semi-structured interviews were chosen as data gathering tool. The results show that social entrepreneurs can foster the slow fashion movement by executing social actions through education, inclusivity, acting on the supply chain, and political support. Moreover, social entrepreneurs are able to play the role of agitators in the respective movement. However, the slow fashion movement has to gain more popularity to strengthen the SEs’ business models.
