Abstract
The Province of Fryslân has experienced stable growth over the past years when it comes to domestic tourists. They are attracted to the landscape, the northern image consisting of peace, space, and nature. However, the public opinion shows that there are several prejudices concerning the province. Hence, the reason why this research is concerned with the experiences of Frisians when confronted with the stereotype carried by tourists. To uncover the experiences of this unique occurrence a phenomenological approach had been adopted. Through a content analysis focusing on the informational introduction about the Province of Fryslân of booking and destination management organization websites and various blogposts, the representation of Frisians could be distilled. This yielded positive results regarding the representation of Frisians. Semi-structured interviews were chosen as the primary method to uncover the experiences of Frisians. When comparing the results of the content analysis and the interviews there are several aspects to be noted. First is the unanimous negative experience of the Frisian inhabitants. However, there appears to be incongruity between the stereotype experienced by the Frisians and the stereotype carried by domestic tourists perceived by the Frisians. The perceived stereotype is more negative than the experienced stereotype. Secondly, is the response to the stereotype, there is a strong divide in the responses. Lastly, the stereotype does not solely cause negativity, it has the positive benefit of domestic tourists having low expectations of the province. This is identified to be a driver for positive encounters between Frisians and domestic tourists.
