Abstract
Literature on the concept of the Circular Economy (CE) is heavily pioneered by the production and manufacturing sector and mainly looked at from a developed country's perspective. This research paper takes a new perspective by thoroughly researching the adoption of a CE and barriers to its implementation in the hospitality sector in the Netherlands and Indonesia through a comparative case study, in form of in-depth interviews. Findings suggest that businesses in the Netherlands are hindered in their transition to adopting circular economy business strategies (CEBS) by their self-imposed need of delivering quality service and insufficient access to confined information on actionable circular interventions. For Indonesia, the predominant barriers were the weak infrastructure, lack of regulatory enforcement and facilitation, and a lack of education and mindset. Ultimately, this paper contributes a developing country perspective to the current discussion and provides novel insights into the application of a CE in the hospitality industry. This research provides academics and practitioners a way to better analyze, understand and overcome the difficulties of adopting CEBS, especially in developing countries. Policymakers benefit from this study, by being able to grasp the barriers to CE necessary to formulate policies to galvanize a transition.
