Abstract

Energy emissions are rising (IEA, 2019). While many approaches and technologies are necessary to combat climate change and decarbonize the energy system, drivers of innovation such as entrepreneurship (Stam, 2008) can play a vital role on a local scale. Connecting entrepreneurship to sustainability and employing the concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems as a research lens, this paper investigates the region of Friesland and finds that the existing elements do not suffice to aid entrepreneurs in developing opportunities effectively and advance the transition. However, certain elements hold potential and could improve the status quo if they were to be developed. Adding to the body of knowledge, this paper argues that current definitions of the entrepreneurial elements do not fully grasp the complexities of dimensions such as culture and proposes a re-evaluation as well as longitudinal studies to further understand the workings of entrepreneurial ecosystems.
