Abstract
This research analyses settlement and socialization experiences of Syrian women in Friesland, the Netherlands. It explores their interconnected experiences of social exclusion and inclusion, which refers to the limited or lack of access to social, economic, political, civic or spatial spheres and the process of improving terms of participation in society. The use of intersectional and gender lenses of analysis allowed for an in-depth understanding of women’s experiences in the Frisian context, particularly with respect to their aspirations and frustrations. In-depth qualitative interviews were held with 16 Syrian women and 2 Syrian men, living in an asylum-seeking center or homes in Friesland. The experiences of Syrian women varied across contexts and the individual’s social location contributes to their inclusion or exclusion. In Friesland, Syrian women are situated in spaces of inclusion, exclusion and in-between, in various physical, cultural and social contexts. One woman exclaims that the challenges she faces are “taal, fietsen en weer!” [language, biking and weather]. These aspects of community, mobility, freedom, Dutch norms are prevailing experiences among Syrian women in Friesland.
