Abstract

Dutch education experiences many troubles in today’s society. Especially the transition between secondary school and higher education brings along differences and problems. Liberal education could potentially be among the solutions to soften these differences and problems and provide a better transition. This research focuses on how the transition from secondary school to higher education can be connected more effectively in the Netherlands and how liberal education can be a potential solution to help connect the two further. This research was done through a literature review and qualitative interviews. The results show that secondary schools and higher education should improve their communication and clarity in students’ expectations, along with added alternative assessment methods in secondary school education. Furthermore, liberal education is seen as a viable alternative for common higher education. Adding certain aspects of liberal education to secondary school could prove to be beneficial to students’ development. However, there are still significant knowledge gaps in clarity of expectations, sufficient knowledge of liberal education institutions and transition difficulties related to liberal education that still need more attention.
