Abstract
This philosophical and historical paper aims to shed light on the moral responsibility that actors have toward themselves and others. I demonstrate that such performing artists bear a special moral responsibility as a result of their significant societal influence. I further argue that they can thus be ascribed what Andrew Crosbie has coined ‘role model responsibility’. This concept implies that those engaged in the art of acting hold responsibility because their actions can be emulated by people who wish to be like them character and/or profession-wise. I also explore alternative perspectives and provide nuances to the framework of role model responsibility.
