Abstract

This study sheds light on humanizing data visualizations as it can be argued that humans lack the ability to grasp the value of numbers fully, inhibiting the visualization’s impact. One way to humanize data visualizations is the use of info-experiences. This form of data visualization incorporates data storytelling and stimulates its audience to emotionally connect with the data. The aim of this study is to investigate how info-experiences can be assessed and how they can create social impact. To do so, an impact assessment framework is created and applied by analyzing an info-experience on the topic of feminism. Data is collected using a media analysis and through the distribution of an online survey to its visitors. The results show that this info-experience was able to have a sustained impact on its visitors. This was mainly influenced by the perceived quality of the event and its ability to spark conversations. Overall, it can be concluded from this study that info-experiences can be seen as a viable tool for creating social impact. Furthermore, this study contributed to the literature on humanizing data by establishing a framework with which info-experiences can be assessed. Limitations of the study include using a non-random sampling method and only focusing on the long-term impact of one info-experience. For future research inquiries, it is advised to validate the findings of this study by analyzing more info-experiences using the proposed impact assessment framework.
