Abstract
Despite its importance and influence on global plastic consumption, plastic management in the hospitality industry remains largely under-researched. As a preliminary study for the project proposal ‘Plastic in Hospitality & Tourism: a Global Problem with Local Solutions’ by the Professorship of Sustainability in Hospitality and Tourism at NHL Stenden, this study aims to investigate the perceived opportunities and barriers to reducing, reusing, and recycling single-use plastics among selected project partners. By means of a thematic narrative analysis, four project partners engaged in hospitality firms in Friesland were interviewed to investigate their perceptions of plastic management, the Circular Economy, and nudging among employees and guests. This paper aims to better understand what limits the project partners from reducing their plastic consumption and to find what we can learn from their current experienced successes. The results revealed that the key perceived plastic management barrier themes are (1) plastic packaged food and cleaning supplies from suppliers, (2) no possibility for plastic separation, (3) laws and regulations, as well as (4) staff motivation. For the opportunities component of the research question, it was found that further research should be conducted for effective nudging strategies in plastic reduction, as only one participant has currently implemented this in their business. Secondly, further pilot research should be conducted for the identified best practices, such as the bicycle waste pick-up service. Furthermore, this thesis recommends to continue research on the additional emerging themes, which are increased plastic utilisation by all the participants due to Covid-19 and perceived low plastic waste standards of the Green Key certification. Finally, further research should be conducted on plastic reduction and nudging in hospitality in general due to the current limited availability thereof. Keywords: plastic management in hospitality, perceived plastic management, Circular Economy, 3R framework, nudging theory, Friesland
